IIT GUWAHATI INTERVIEW EXPERIENCE

I got a call for interview from IIT Guwahati to be held on 7th June 2010 for Ph.D Program. I was facing the first Ph.D interview of my life just after doing my B.Tech. So this was a matter of pressure.
All my competitors were Masters Holders and I was just a Bachelor. I had applied here for control systems.
When I entered the interview hall the interviewers said you have just finished your Bachelors. Without having a Masters Degree how can you achieve excellence in research?
I said achieving excellence depends on mind set up of the candidate and I am destined to pursue a research oriented career.
Then they asked a lot of questions about B.Tech project.
Then came the time of questionnaire of control systems.
1. Why is PI controller beneficial for control systems?
2. Why we seldom use PID controllers?
3. Write the state space equations and solve.
4. What is LTI System?
5. What do you mean by State Transition Matrix?
6. How does STM affect the System output?
7. Name a few Devices where state may change internally without any Input.
8. What do you mean by a Stable Stable.
9. What are the different Types of Stability?
10. In Exponential stability what is the constant beta called?

Interview Experience (IIT Kharagpur) M.Tech

Name: SOUMEN MANDAL.
GATE ROLL: EE 6019244.
AIR: 1690
Fortunately I was called for interview on 17th May 2010 to be held at IIT Kharagpur GATE Office. I was the first candidate to be called by the interview board.
There were two members in my board one gentleman and other a lady.
Initially they judged my research aptitude and asked me Why I want to pursue M.Tech.
Ans: I said : I had an ambition for research from the very beginning of my professional career.
Then he asked why dont u go for Ph.D?
I said definitely I will pursue it if I get a chance.
Then they asked abt the stream. My first choice was Control Systems. They said Control is Completely saturated and it is very difficult to pursue research in it. Why do you want to pursue research in this field?
Ans: Due to 2 reasons:
1. Because it is my ambition.
2. Although it is difficult but to cope and stand amidst difficulties alone paves an unique and great career.
They were quite satisfied.

Now came the Time of Final Year Project. Friends be very thorough in this matter. And one absurd question they did ask: What new research hav u done in your project?
Ans: My project was: "Direct Vector Control of PMSM using Fuzzy Logic Controller". I boldly answered nothing new research sir but my project was such that I could learn a lot of topics which are essential topics of M.Tech curriculum. They were quite satisfied.

Now the final round. They asked very basic questions like we all read in +2:
1. What are random numbers.
2. What is Faradays Law and Lenz Law. Why do we ignore the negative sign caused due to Lenzs law in mathematical calculations.
3. What is the principle of synchronous motor? Why there is a locking between stator and rotor magnetic flux?
4. Define Hysterisis.
5. What is Permeability, Retentivity, Susseptibility, Coercivity.
6. What is Ohms law. Give the mathematical equation.

A Motivating Letter: Must Read

A letter from APJ Abdul Kalam:

Learn to push yourself up amidst difficulties and not pull others down by useless wastage of your valuable time

Remember-Its only one life we have and we should live it to the best

Dr. Abdul Kalam's Letter to Every Indian, (Our former President)

Why is the media here so negative?
Why are we in India so embarrassed to recognize our own strengths, our achievements?

  1. We are such a great nation. We have so many amazing success stories but we refuse to acknowledge them. Why?
  2. We are the first in milk production.
  3. We are number one in Remote sensing satellites.
  4. We are the second largest producer of wheat.
  5. We are the second largest producer of rice.

Look at Dr. Sudarshan , he has transferred the tribal village into a self-sustaining, self-driving unit. There are millions of such achievements but our media is only obsessed in the bad news and failures and disasters.

I was in Tel Aviv once and I was reading the Israeli newspaper. It was the day after a lot of attacks and bombardments and deaths had taken place. The Hamas had struck. But the front page of the newspaper had the picture of a Jewish gentleman who in five years had transformed his desert into an orchid and a granary. It was this inspiring picture that everyone woke up to. The gory details of killings, bombardments, deaths, were inside in the newspaper, buried among other news.

In India we only read about death, sickness, terrorism, crime.. Why are we so NEGATIVE? Another question: Why are we, as a nation so obsessed with foreign things? We want foreign T.Vs, we want foreign shirts. We want foreign technology.

Why this obsession with everything imported. Do we not realize that self-respect comes with self-reliance? I was in Hyderabad giving this lecture, when a 14 year old girl asked me for my autograph. I asked her what her goal in life is. She replied: I want to live in a developed India . For her, you and I will have to build this developed India. You must proclaim. India is not an under-developed nation; it is a highly developed nation.

Do you have 10 minutes? Allow me to come back with a vengeance.

Got 10 minutes for your country? If yes, then read; otherwise, choice is yours..

YOU say that our government is inefficient.
YOU say that our laws are too old.
YOU say that the municipality does not pick up the garbage.
YOU say that the phones don't work, the railways are a joke. The airline is the worst in the world, mails never reach their destination.
YOU say that our country has been fed to the dogs and is the absolute pits.

YOU say, say and say. What do YOU do about it?

Take a person on his way to Singapore . Give him a name - 'YOURS'. Give him a face - 'YOURS'. YOU walk out of the airport and you are at your International best. In Singapore you don't throw cigarette butts on the roads or eat in the stores. YOU are as proud of their Underground links as they are.. You pay $5 (approx. Rs. 60) to drive through Orchard Road (equivalent of Mahim Causeway or Pedder Road) between 5 PM and 8 PM. YOU come back to the parking lot to punch your parking ticket if you have over stayed in a restaurant or a shopping mall irrespective of your status identity… In Singapore you don't say anything, DO YOU? YOU wouldn't dare to eat in public during Ramadan, in Dubai .. YOU would not dare to go out without your head covered in Jeddah.

YOU would not dare to buy an employee of the telephone exchange in London at 10 pounds (Rs.650) a month to, 'see to it that my STD and ISD calls are billed to someone else.’ YOU would not dare to speed beyond 55 mph (88 km/h) in Washington and then tell the traffic cop, 'Jaanta hai main kaun hoon (Do you know who I am?). I am so and so's son. Take your two bucks and get lost.' YOU wouldn't chuck an empty coconut shell anywhere other than the garbage pail on the beaches in Australia and New Zealand ..

Why don't YOU spit Paan on the streets of Tokyo ? Why don't YOU use examination jockeys or buy fake certificates in Boston ??? We are still talking of the same YOU. YOU who can respect and conform to a foreign system in other countries but cannot in your own. You who will throw papers and cigarettes on the road the moment you touch Indian ground. If you can be an involved and appreciative citizen in an alien country, why cannot you be the same here in India ?

In America every dog owner has to clean up after his pet has done the job. Same in Japan ..
Will the Indian citizen do that here?' He's right. We go to the polls to choose a government and after that forfeit all responsibility.

We sit back wanting to be pampered and expect the government to do everything for us whilst our contribution is totally negative. We expect the government to clean up but we are not going to stop chucking garbage all over the place nor are we going to stop to pick a up a stray piece of paper and throw it in the bin. We expect the railways to provide clean bathrooms but we are not going to learn the proper use of bathrooms.

We want Indian Airlines and Air India to provide the best of food and toiletries but we are not going to stop pilfering at the least opportunity.

This applies even to the staff who is known not to pass on the service to the public.

When it comes to burning social issues like those related to women, dowry, girl child! and others, we make loud drawing room protestations and continue to do the reverse at home. Our excuse? 'It's the whole system which has to change, how will it matter if I alone forego my sons' rights to a dowry.' So who's going to change the system? What does a system consist of? Very conveniently for us it consists of our neighbours, other households, other cities, other communities and the government. But definitely not me and YOU. When it comes to us actually making a positive contribution to the system we lock ourselves along with our families into a safe cocoon and look into the distance at countries far away and wait for a Mr.Clean to come along & work miracles for us with a majestic sweep of his hand or we leave the country and run away.

Like lazy cowards hounded by our fears we run to America to bask in their glory and praise their system. When New York becomes insecure we run to England . When England experiences unemployment, we take the next flight out to the Gulf. When the Gulf is war struck, we demand to be rescued and brought home by the Indian government. Everybody is out to abuse and rape the country. Nobody thinks of feeding the system. Our conscience is mortgaged to money.

Dear Indians, The article is highly thought inductive, calls for a great deal of introspection and pricks one's conscience too…. I am echoing J. F. Kennedy's words to his fellow Americans to relate to Indians…..

'ASK WHAT WE CAN DO FOR INDIA AND DO WHAT HAS TO BE DONE TO MAKE INDIA WHAT AMERICA AND OTHER WESTERN COUNTRIES ARE TODAY'

Let’s do what India needs from us.

RETURN TO STONE AGE

The dictum of today's lifestyle directs that day is not so far when we humans would return to the stone age thus satisfying the cyclic chain of nature. In todays world with very frank culture arousing superior sexual feelings in today's youth definitely follows the fact that humans are none different than dogs in disposition. In stone age there was no bonds of marriage and there was a concept of free and open sex. Thus polygamy existed all round the world in that age. In that period a man could have sex with a woman at a place and have the same at some other place. What can we compare it with is like dog-bitch scenario. Today's youth speak of the same culture and feel it as their status symbol. The mentality is like this have with one then with other and follow a chain of continuum.
Viewing my above paragraph any one would find conclusion that the man writing the blog is a great idiot lacking every sexual feelings। But friend you are in a wrong trap. I never oppose the fact of living relationships. The people like Shiv Sena are more stupid who thrash the couples celebrating valentine's day on the streets. Once I came through in newspaper that Shiv Sena activists balding the head offs of the couples celebrating valentine's day. The central question comes in our mind whether it is a good practice to have a society with open sex or to have a conservative society. Once I was watching America's classic porn actress selection ceremony "Porn Idol". Are such ideas viable. Although a number of people blab out that such ceremonies are logic and relevant with the fact that these allows every individual to express hidden talent. How can one say Sex demonstration adds to talent and the capability of demonstration is a hidden talent. I spoke to such bastards and said, friends Sex and Sexual Organs are gift of God and Nature and its too inhumanitarian to exploit them. But then the next question comes: friend the mind is also gift of God then why do you exploit your mental ability. True if both are gift of God there is no difference in selling of Minds or Sex. I get bamboozled at this juncture. A number of philosophers like Rajnish Osho said: भोग से मुक्ति . i.e. spirituality can only be achieved by killing your sexual desires which in fact can be achieved when one has done enough of that to kill his desires. Killing desires id also a non sense fact. So a number of points float in the empty brain. It is said beauty lies in the eyes of beholder. So it is now the feelings of the reader to select the right path for him as such arguments have no end and no conclusion.

THE BOTTLE

A bottle can be almighty for one in distress, love, sorrow or a jolly mood. I definitely had the feel of the concept after having 4 to 5 pegs. In today's materialistic world filled with anxiety, selfish attitude and piccaunt taste it becomes imperative for each one of us to rely on the almighty bottle. Bottle is unique in its sense as it makes a person to blab out or express his free imaginations of mind. Once the great philosopher Aristotle said: Never burn your feelings in yourself else the feelings will burn you. Similar statements were quoted by the father of Case study and great psychiatrist Sigmund Freud that anxiety disorders arise specifically due to multiple stresses in brain. The bottle serves as the only way to remove the anxiety by expressing the feelings. I have personally felt this while having a conversation with my girlfriend. Till the time I am without my bottle friend I become more logical and analytic being an engineer. The bottle serves as a magic. In its booby trap one can loose all his logical and engineering feelings and can rustle himself in the wind of his spouse emotions. All these paves with the fact that a bottle is the most powerful for every individual in today's world which can eradicate every disease, every pain, every sorrow and every hidden emotion.

INDIA OF MY DREAMS

I get bamboozled when I look into this world around me and us. More explicitly when I glance into the system of my great homeland. If we have a glance over the Indian system which may range from educational to social, scientific to mythology, literature to philosophy, laws to rules; at every point imperfections can be seen. Although the great scientist Charles Robert Boyle stated: No matter in the universe is ideal. But being humans and not being perfect animals we must create some difference. India and the great Indians boast to be the superpower by 2020. But are we really progressing towards this goal. A lot of questions need to be answered: Would we be ever able to achieve the point of success? Would we be ever able to be self sufficient. Success as per Henry Ford was defined as “The progressive realization of ones goal”. Are we really progressing??
Having an analysis on the hurdles of our growth the foremost factor to be taken into account is “Change in Mentality” of the Indians. Can we Indians boast of the fact that we are civilized creatures? Definitely NOT. When even an educated Indian citizen is advised to change his/her interim mentality and thinking, they simply point out the problems like poverty, unemployment, scarcity and religion bias. These factors what we are pointing out are just socio economic and natural factors which we have created and we need to cope with the situation. These are not real problems. Once the great scientist and philosopher Eisenstein stated that: So far as the causes refer to reality, they are not certain. And so far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality. So we cannot consider these factors merely as the bottleneck of our growth. I would like to state a practical case here which is stated by my friend who is also studying B.Tech with us in our college. The man is a strong supporter of Hinduism and also Indian culture. He even today blabs out as the Muslims destroyed the Ram Mandir of Hindus about 500 years ago, today Hindus have every right to destroy Babri Masjid. Strange. With such level of education people saying this!!! Its just as putting old wine in a new bottle thus curving the level of our progress. Todays politicians with strange piccaunt minds promote such activities and they cry in front of public regarding democracy, sovereignty and development. All these cant follow a long way. India of every Indian’s dream can only be realized in practice if we have a mentality to change ourselves at an individual level.
